Otto was a German physicist, engineer and natural philosopher that built the first machine to create an electric spark. He used this electrical generator for many experiments with electricity; he was the first man to view electro- luminescence. He invented the first air pump and used it to study the phe-nomenon of vacuum and the role of air in combustion and respiration. Astronomy Day at The Cumberland Science Museum this year was held in his honor. |

In 1657,
Otto Van Guericke carried out his famous
demonstration that several teams of
horses could not pull apart joined
hemispheres when the air within had been
evacuated. This famous
demo was recreated for the first
time in America at the Cumberland
Science Museum on Astronomy
Day. E=MC2 was there with APSU Del
Square Psi Astronomy students and Dr.
Buckner. The students were able to take part
in the activities. E=MC2 shared
their Research,
Radio Jove, and Dobsonian. |
