"A group of Rossview students from Mrs. Bowers’ class traveled to the north coast of the Dominican Republic this past spring break on a service-learning trip. During the eight days, students worked at the Mariposa foundation where they earned 35 service-learning hours. Their community service consisted of painting murals, hanging a basketball goal, teaching English and Art classes, cleaning a local school, talking with the foundation’s psychologist, swim lessons, etc. The Mariposa foundation’s goals are to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce the child mortality rate, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development. This trip is designed for students who love to learn about various cultures while wanting to make a difference to help others in need".
